10 water saving tips from PlumbSpec

Saving water is very important these days, as we face the climbing costs of water. PlumbSpec has some tips for a water wise home.

Water saving tips from PlumbSpec
TAKE SHORTER SHOWERS

A 10 minute shower with an old style shower head can use up to 250 litres of water. A 4 minute shower using a three star rated shower head will use around 36 litres, this is an 85% saving.

MAKE USE OF YOUR GREYWATER

You can make use of greywater by connecting your washing machine outlet to a tank or irrigation system to use the water on your garden.

INSTALL AERATORS OR FLOW RESTRICTORS ON YOUR TAPS

These tools will help save water when rinsing dishes or running water. Hand basins only need to flow at four litres per minute and kitchen and laundry taps at nine to 12 litres per minute.

USE WATER WISELY IN THE GARDEN

Use a trigger nozzle hose to water only where necessary. Don’t water during the heat of the day. Plant a water wise garden.

USE MULCH AND WETTING AGENTS IN THE GARDEN

Mulch reduces evaporation and run off. Also, wetting agents retain moisture in the soil, helping to reduce your water use.

INSTALL A RAINWATER TANK

Save thousands of litres of drinking water per year. Use the rainwater for your garden or connect the tank to your laundry or bathroom for washing clothes and flushing the toilet.

CHOOSE WATER SAVING APPLIANCES

If you need to replace your washing machine or dishwasher, don’t just go for the one with the lowest price tag! Select a water efficient model with the most stars, this will save you money in the long run.

USE YOUR WASHING MACHINE AND DISHWASHER EFFICIENTLY

Only switch them on when you have a full load or use the water saving option. Not only will this save water, but you’ll save money on your electricity bill too.

INSTALL A DUAL FLUSH TOILET

The toilet is the second biggest user of water in the home, after the shower. Replacing your single flush cistern with the most efficient dual flush cistern uses approximately 60 percent less water.

CHECK YOUR LOO FOR A LEAK

A leaking toilet cistern can waste 16,000 litres of water a year without anyone noticing. To check, put a few drops of food colouring in the cistern and wait for 15 minutes. If any of the colouring has appeared in the toilet bowl, your cistern is leaking.

Paying too much for water?

Paying too much for water?

Paying too much for water?

Water-efficient appliances and fixtures save water and money and can make a big difference to Australia’s overall use of clean tap water.

Paying too much for water

Building or renovating? This is often the perfect time to consider installing appliances and fixtures that allow you to reduce the amount of water you use.

In your home, the appliances and fixtures that use most water will usually be the washing machine, dishwasher, shower and toilet.

If you want to install a grey water system, it’s a good idea to factor this in during the planning stages. For example, it can be difficult to retrofit a grey water system that recycles water from the shower, bath and hand basins.

Australians could save more than $1 billion on our water and energy bills just by using more water efficient appliances and fixtures. About 25 per cent of these savings would come from using more water efficient shower heads, another 50 per cent from more efficient washing machines and over 20 per cent from water efficient toilets.

Other ways to save on water usage is to plant native plants that do not require a lot of water to survive. You can also save water by sweeping, not hosing paths and driveways, wash the car on the lawn so you can water the lawn and end up with a clean car.

Also make sure you do a monthly maintenance check on your plumbing systems. Take a quick look for leaking taps, wet areas around toilets and tap bases, check ceilings and walls for water damage or mould and look for spongy areas in the garden that may be from a damaged pipe.

For all the latest advice on water efficient appliances, grey water systems, septic systems, fixtures and fittings, maintenance and repairs, call Plumbspec 0417 555 325

You did what?! Common Plumbing Mistakes

You did what?! Common Plumbing Mistakes

You did what?! Common Plumbing Mistakes

There are several common mistakes that homeowners make which often result in plumbers having to be called in to fix the problem.

You did what?!

There are a few things you can do, or not do, to avoid costly plumbing repair jobs.

Here are some of the top mistakes made by DIY aficionados.

Over tightening of plumbing fixtures

The annoying sound of a dripping tap in the bathroom or kitchen area is a common story we hear. However, no amount of turning it tighter and tighter is going to stop the water from coming out. Pushing or pulling on tap handles will only cause them to break and then you will have a real problem on your hands as the water cascades out. Over tightening of plumbing fixtures and appliances can strip the threads that help screw the parts together, leaving you with a repair job that could have been avoided. If you are not an expert in home handyman repairs, call in a plumber to do the work properly for you.

Bath and Shower fixtures are not shelves

Tempting though it might be, to buy a hanging shower rack to save some space and keep all the shower and bath products off the floor and out of the way, this can be a disaster waiting to happen. Plumbers have been called out to stop water gushing out of the shower head because it had been broken off due to the weight of toiletries hanging from the shower unit. The shower head will snap off at the threaded joint, so it is not a simple repair job.

Treating the sink like a garbage chute

Kitchen and laundry sinks can become blocked or damaged due to many forms of waste. As an example, we have found paint, grouting material and even joint compound (used for repairing walls), poured into household sinks. While the liquid part may go through, the solids will harden up and blockages could occur. If fixatives are blocking the sink pipes then it could involve pipe replacement, which is not going to be a cheap option. A build-up of fat, hair and food waste is often an easy repair, but if you have tried a drain clearing compound or plunger and the water still does not drain, it is time to call in the professionals.

Flushing the wrong objects down the toilet

Overflowing toilet bowls are not a pretty sight or the most appealing fragrance to have through your home. Plus, the over-flowing water can cause damage to floors and walls. Plumbers have the best stories of what they have found when it comes to unblocking these pipes, but the usual culprits are toys and household items. If you live with small children, then invest in seat locks until they reach the age where trying to flush toys, a few toilet rolls, clothing, or the front door keys down the toilet is not a fun game anymore!

Will Winter cost you money?

Will Winter cost you money?

Will Winter cost you money?

Winter is here, so it’s the time to do a safety check in your home to avoid any expensive surprises. These PlumbSpec tips will help.

Will Winter cost you money?

Air Conditioning

A filter you should be cleaning regularly is your air conditioning. A reverse cycle air conditioner is the most energy efficient way to heat your home in winter.

Whether or not you plan on using your air conditioning for heating your home this winter, it’s good practice to perform regular maintenance of your system. You can clean the filters yourself, but unless you have recently had a full professional service of your system, a filter clean is often not enough to ensure the efficiency of your machine and the quality of the air it delivers.

A professional clean removes the build-up of harmful mould, bacteria, pet dander, dead animals, pollen and dust. A clean air conditioner also uses up to 30% less power to run, saving you money.

How old is your air conditioner? If it is over 5 years old, it would be a good idea to get it checked, in case it is due for replacement.

Portable Heaters

If you don’t use air conditioning for heating, there are a few checks you should do before switching on your portable heater. Make sure there are no frays or breakages in the cords. Don’t use an electric heater where it may come in contact with water. Never leave it unattended or in a high traffic area, particularly with children.

Outdoor gas heaters should be checked before use. You will need to have a licensed gas fitter service your outdoor heater if you have difficulty lighting it, the flame is yellow, or there is a strange smell or noise coming from the heater.

Interior Hoses

Flexible hoses, or stainless steel braided hoses, are a common installation usually found under sinks. Their design means they are vulnerable to kinks, frays and rust and can lead to a burst or leak. Flexi hoses must be checked at least every 6 months to prevent potential house flooding. If your flexi-hose is looking a little worse for wear, you should have it replaced by a licensed plumber as soon as possible.

Safety Switches

Your switchboard gathers dust, debris and moisture over time causing safety switches to slow or even cease. This can be a huge safety risk for you and your family. Safety switches should be tested every 3 months to ensure the mechanism works freely. To test your safety switches, press the “Test” or “T” button. The safety switch should then trip, shutting off power to the circuit. To reset push the switches back to the ‘On’ position.

If it does not stay on, you will need to call an electrician to repair or replace the safety switches to ensure you and your family’s safety.

Smoke Alarms

Fire and Emergency services organisations strongly recommend testing your smoke alarms once a month. To make sure you remember, you could set yourself a reminder for the first weekend of the month. Testing your smoke alarms takes less than 10 minutes but ensures your family has the best chance of staying safe in a house fire.

Smoke alarm legislation

If you have a new or recently renovated property, you are required by law to have interconnected, photoelectric smoke alarms installed – by a licensed electrician – in every room and hallway. Any homes leased or sold need to meet compliance after 5 years. All owner-occupied residents also need to meet compliance after 10 years.
