Create an Outdoor Haven for Entertaining.

There’s nothing better than entertaining on a warm summer’s day, so give your outdoor space a face lift now, so you are ready for when Summer hits.

Create an Outdoor Haven for Entertaining
An outdoor entertaining area can be as simple or as elaborate as you like, but most of them have a few things in common. A shady area to sit, a BBQ and great times to be had.

Take your outdoor entertaining area to the next level with some of these ideas:

  • Build your BBQ into a bench and hook up to your mains gas, that way you will never run out of gas mid BBQ again.
  • Leave a space in your outdoor bench for a built-in fridge (bar or larger), this will make grabbing a cold one so much easier.
  • Add a tap and sink for easy access to water and somewhere for a quick clean up or hand wash.
  • A bi-fold window to your kitchen will make set up and clean up quicker.
  • Install ceiling fans over your entertaining area. Not only will they provide a cooling breeze, the moving air will also help to deter mosquitoes.
  • Install some outdoor heating, there are many options available now.
  • Install some outdoor power points for a convenient power supply when needed.
  • Lighting is always something that is overlooked in an outdoor space, talk to your local professionals at PlumbSpec for some great lighting ideas.
  • Roll-down PVC blinds are a great addition for inclement weather conditions and to deter insects.
  • Why not install a spa tub or outdoor bath on your deck or outdoor area?
  • Create eating, cooking and relaxation zones for a truly organised and elegant space.
  • Add some greenery to create calm and filter the air if your space is more enclosed.
  • A deck herb garden is ideal for adding a bit of flavour to your next BBQ.
  • Built-in bench seats are not only handy, they can double as storage boxes as well.
  • Connect your home to the outdoors by installing bi-fold, French or sliding doors to your outdoor area.
  • An outdoor shower is a great addition to a pool area or perfect if you and yours little darlings like to get dirty in the great outdoors. Leave your mud, dirt and grass clippings outside please!

What’s that Funky Smell?

What’s that Funky Smell?

What’s that Funky Smell?

Modern plumbing systems are fantastic; removing waste and dealing with the messy side of life. They can sometimes let us down though…

What do you do when your plumbing starts to emit foul odours or worse, backlog and flood your home?

If you have tried all the usual fixes for blocked drains etc. and the problem remains, it may be time to call in the professionals, before you need to call in the army to save you!.

A blockage only the army can save you from

Here are a few tips to help you deal with some smelly situations.

Dry or Blocked P Trap
If you haven’t used a sink or bath for a while the water in the P Trap can evaporate and allow sewer smells to travel up into the room. the P Trap could also be blocked. Run the tap for a few minutes to flush the drain and refill the P Trap. If the water fills the sink, it will be a blockage.

Fat and Residue Build Up
A coagulation of fat, oil, grease, hair or food scraps can block drains and restrict the flow of water and waste. This can lead to quite a strong odour.
To help prevent this, never put grease or oil down the drains and use a drain strainer to catch food scraps from entering the system.

Flushable Wet Wipes
When it comes down to it, they are not so ‘flushable’ as one would think. They don’t break down like toilet paper and cause major blockages in the pipes and damage the environment. Throw them in the bin instead.

A Dank Dishwasher
Water and waste can sit in the bottom of your dishwasher if you do not clean the strainer and drain covers every few days. The smell can be confused with a drain issue in the kitchen. Use a dishwasher cleaner once a week to freshen things up. You wouldn’t wash your dishes in a filthy sink.

Damaged or Degraded Pipes
Old pipes can crack and let soil in blocking the pipe and creating a backlog effect. Accidental damage will also cause issues, so when parking in your yard or undertaking work in the garden, be sure you know where your pipes are.

Why DIY Plumbing Can Be Disastrous

Why DIY Plumbing Can Be Disastrous

Why DIY Plumbing Can Be Disastrous.

When something goes wrong with your plumbing, the decision to try and tackle the problem yourself or hire a licensed plumber should be easy.

Why DIY Plumbing can be disastrous

Whether you think you might have the tools or basic knowledge to take on your plumbing system or not, it’s always best to get in touch with a local licensed plumber.

Legal aspects and insurance
In Australia, any plumbing work must legally be carried out by a licensed plumber. Any issues relating to your water supply systems, sewerage or drainage system must be tackled by the professionals. If you choose to take them on yourself, any problems won’t be covered by insurance, whereas a licensed plumber will not only have the knowledge and tools to fix your issues but will provide a warranty for their workmanship.

Safety
Plumbing work must be undertaken by a licensed professional for a number of reasons, with safety at the forefront. Handing over the tools to a professional plumber means ensuring your own safety and the wellbeing of your family or other members of the household. Plumbing can be a tricky business and taking it on yourself can lead to the contamination of drinking water, major leaks, potential breaks, and personal injury.

Long term costs
Hiring a professional will provide a long-term fix for your issue, as well as advice on upkeep and what to look out for in the future. Attempting to fix the problem yourself could lead to bigger problems and potentially costly damage. Getting in touch with a professional will save you money in the long term and relieve stress in the short term.

Knowledge and experience
Licensed plumbers go through rigorous training to retain their licenses in Australia. They are only given a license when it is deemed that they have the knowledge and expertise to carry out any level of plumbing work; from the basic to the tricky. Plumbers have the correct tools and fittings on hand, understand the hardware and homes in Australia, and know the best way to tackle each individual issue. Many are highly experienced, with years of training and work under their tool belts.

Many times, we have seen some major and costly issues created by DIY plumbers. Trust the professionals, trust PlumbSpec for all your plumbing needs.

DIY Plumbing Disasters Part 2

DIY Plumbing Disasters Part 2

DIY Plumbing Disasters Part 2.

The DIY enthusiast is always on hand to do urgent repairs or remodelling. They strap on a tool belt and dive headfirst into… trouble!

DIY Plumbing Disasters I should have called PlumbSpec

Below are few things that should be handled by a professional.

Clogged Toilet

If the good old plunger hasn’t moved the… err blockage, then call in a professional to get things moving again.

It could be something simple or could be a breakage or blockage in the outside system.

Faulty Hot Water Heater

A burst of freezing cold water when you are enjoying a nice hot shower can be a real shock to the system and this is a repair that must be tackled immediately.

Never attempt to do a repair or installation yourself. Not only does this need to be done by a professional for guaranteed hot water, but also for safety reasons as well.

There are a number of different style of hot water systems including, solar, electric, gas, storage, continuous flow or instantaneous systems and heat pumps. Electricity, gas and water in any combination is extremely dangerous and should always be repaired or replaced by a professional.

Over tightening or Sealing Plumbing Connections

Sure, your time at the gym is paying off, maybe you can bench press a small car, sure you are impressive to your partner, but overdoing the muscle while tightening the fittings on the taps is not going to end well. Over tightening fittings can result in stripping the threads causing them to leak or ultimately break.

Many DIY aficionados also think it is a great idea to just tape, glue or use spray on sealant to fix the problem. This can lead to expensive repairs and the need for complete plumbing fixture replacement in the future.

Time to call the Experts?

Almost, looks similar, good enough, just about, nearly, approximately, roughly close to working, none of these sayings should be applied to plumbing work. If it’s not done right, you are going to end up costing yourself a fortune and possibly put yourself and your family at risk.

Smell Gas?

If you can smell gas, you need to turn off the supply and call for a professional immediately. This is a task for the professionals only.

Plumbspec have a 24/7 emergency call out available and highly trained professionals on hand for all your plumbing, electrical, air conditioning and gas fitting needs.

DIY Plumbing Disasters Part 1

DIY Plumbing Disasters Part 1

DIY Plumbing Disasters Part 1.

Who needs a plumber, just watch ‘how to’ videos on YouTube. These are the famous last words of many DIY home improvement enthusiasts…

Blocked Drains

My sink is blocked with hare

Blocked drains can be a nightmare, a blocked shower drain, kitchen sink or external pipes. DIY ‘experts’ often reach for caustic soda and continue adding more and more until the blockage clears, this can be an environmental nightmare, especially if you have a grey water system. Or the ‘high pressure jet clearance method’, this can cause damage to pipes and drains. Power drain clearing equipment should only be operated by a licensed professional.

Tricky Toilets

Most times a leaking cistern is caused by general wear and tear. Epoxy glue is not the answer. Sometimes it will only be necessary to replace a single part to fix the problem or a replacement may be required.

But there have been a few DIY disasters that really are a case of ‘I should have called Plumbspec!’.

Door cut around toilet I should have called PlumbSpec

Leaking Taps

These can be one of the most annoying plumbing problems and often are simply a case for the DIY plumber to replace a washer. Often simply turning off the mains water can be overlooked, this leads to much shouting, swearing and a big wet mess.

Did the washer go in next or was it the little screw or maybe it was the connector thingy? The correct reassembly of fittings is essential, unfortunately though, different manufacturers can vary components slightly, even with similar looking parts. Be sure to follow the directions or call a professional.

DIY Plumbing

Fire coming out of tap I should have called PlumbSpec

Hubby reassures you, ‘it’s okay, I’ve got this sorted’ and then the tap breathes fire and the bathroom floods.

From time to time, homeowners with basic plumbing knowledge will take on minor renovations.

Unfortunately, many homeowners who complete their own renovations often lack knowledge of proper plumbing systems and local building codes. This can lead to a lot of unnecessary expense and heartache.

Plumbspec are happy to provide you with a free quote and will even give you advice on the latest and greatest innovations available.

Are you at risk of flooding, fire or big repair bills?

Are you at risk of flooding, fire or big repair bills?

Are you at risk of flooding, fire or big repair bills?

With spring cleaning well underway, now is the time to book in for a maintenance check of your plumbing, air conditioning and gas systems.

Are you at risk of flooding fire or big repair bills
Home and business owners can become complacent about having maintenance checks done and only face the regret when their home or business is faced with damage or total destruction.

Here are a few simple things you can do yourself:

  1. Clean around your outdoor air conditioning system to ensure a clear air flow and check for any animal infestations.
  2. Clean your air conditioner filters either by vacuuming or rinsing in warm soapy water, rinsing and drying.
  3. Check the yard for wet or sunken areas in the ground, this could indicate a water leak or broken pipe.
  4. Check all electrical cords for wear and tear.
  5. Check gas bottles and pipes for damage.
  6. Ensure adequate drainage for storm water around your house.
  7. Is your insulation up to standard?
  8. Are your appliances running up to standard and are they energy efficient?
  9. If your water or energy bills have risen at a rapid rate, this could be due to outdated or faulty appliances, a dirty air conditioner or water leaks.
  10. GET A PROFESSIONAL MAINTENANCE CHECK DONE BY PLUMBSPEC.

There are many areas that should not be inspected, repaired or replaced by a home handyman. It is always better to be safe than sorry.

If you are not sure what you should check or handle yourself, we are more than happy to help.
