Will Winter cost you money?

Winter is here, so it’s the time to do a safety check in your home to avoid any expensive surprises. These PlumbSpec tips will help.

Will Winter cost you money?

Air Conditioning

A filter you should be cleaning regularly is your air conditioning. A reverse cycle air conditioner is the most energy efficient way to heat your home in winter.

Whether or not you plan on using your air conditioning for heating your home this winter, it’s good practice to perform regular maintenance of your system. You can clean the filters yourself, but unless you have recently had a full professional service of your system, a filter clean is often not enough to ensure the efficiency of your machine and the quality of the air it delivers.

A professional clean removes the build-up of harmful mould, bacteria, pet dander, dead animals, pollen and dust. A clean air conditioner also uses up to 30% less power to run, saving you money.

How old is your air conditioner? If it is over 5 years old, it would be a good idea to get it checked, in case it is due for replacement.

Portable Heaters

If you don’t use air conditioning for heating, there are a few checks you should do before switching on your portable heater. Make sure there are no frays or breakages in the cords. Don’t use an electric heater where it may come in contact with water. Never leave it unattended or in a high traffic area, particularly with children.

Outdoor gas heaters should be checked before use. You will need to have a licensed gas fitter service your outdoor heater if you have difficulty lighting it, the flame is yellow, or there is a strange smell or noise coming from the heater.

Interior Hoses

Flexible hoses, or stainless steel braided hoses, are a common installation usually found under sinks. Their design means they are vulnerable to kinks, frays and rust and can lead to a burst or leak. Flexi hoses must be checked at least every 6 months to prevent potential house flooding. If your flexi-hose is looking a little worse for wear, you should have it replaced by a licensed plumber as soon as possible.

Safety Switches

Your switchboard gathers dust, debris and moisture over time causing safety switches to slow or even cease. This can be a huge safety risk for you and your family. Safety switches should be tested every 3 months to ensure the mechanism works freely. To test your safety switches, press the “Test” or “T” button. The safety switch should then trip, shutting off power to the circuit. To reset push the switches back to the ‘On’ position.

If it does not stay on, you will need to call an electrician to repair or replace the safety switches to ensure you and your family’s safety.

Smoke Alarms

Fire and Emergency services organisations strongly recommend testing your smoke alarms once a month. To make sure you remember, you could set yourself a reminder for the first weekend of the month. Testing your smoke alarms takes less than 10 minutes but ensures your family has the best chance of staying safe in a house fire.

Smoke alarm legislation

If you have a new or recently renovated property, you are required by law to have interconnected, photoelectric smoke alarms installed – by a licensed electrician – in every room and hallway. Any homes leased or sold need to meet compliance after 5 years. All owner-occupied residents also need to meet compliance after 10 years.

Remove Home Renovation Stress

Remove Home Renovation Stress

Remove Home Renovation Stress.

There’s many things to consider when undergoing home renovations. It’s not just about colour, design, choosing tiles and impressing visitors.

Take the stress out of Home Renovation

Timing is everything and having your trades at the site in the right order can save time and money.

Have a good idea of what you want the finished project to look like. A mood board is fantastic as you can have pictures and samples of finishes and designs. This is also a great guide for the professionals involved, as they can get a feel for the design and your personal tastes.

There are legal requirements to have all the right permits for gas, plumbing and drainage works to be carried out. You must be compliant especially if you intend to sell your home in the future. Always use an experienced, licensed trades person. PlumbSpec can guide you through the miles of red tape that always presents itself as soon as councils and government bodies are involved. Our team will be able to give you advice on the correct permits and approvals needed for the work to be carried out.

Never try to attempt any plumbing, air conditioning or gas fitting jobs yourself! Not only can this be very dangerous, it also voids your home insurance policy.

The friendly team at PlumbSpec have many years of experience across a wide range of professions and can give you the bet options, advice and professional opinions on your next renovation or repair.

By using a professional trades person, you ensure that the work is guaranteed, done properly and finished on time.

How to Choose the Right Sized Air Conditioner for Your Room.

How to Choose the Right Sized Air Conditioner for Your Room.

How to Choose the Right Sized Air Conditioner for Your Room.

Air conditioning is a must have in Australia, so get yours installed or replaced now. But how do you know what is the right size for you?

Air conditioning airflow assessment

False economy:

When installing a new unit or replacing an old one, make sure it is not just energy efficient but also suited to the size of the area it is needed for.

You may save money upfront by installing a unit that is too small for the room but it will end up costing you way more to run as it will need to be constantly working flat out to try and cool down an area that is bigger than it was designed for. This will also mean the the unit will wear out faster. On the flipside, there is no need to install a unit that is too powerful for a small space either. Sure, it will handle the area easily, but so would a smaller unit that costs less and takes up less space.

Energy efficiency is indeed very important but there are many other factors to consider as well, such as sensors that only turn the unit when there is someone in the room, ability to activate the unit via a remote app, so you can have the house cooling off before you get home, or even self cleaning systems that keep those energy efficiency levels high.

New unit placement:

Sometimes, where you would like to place an air conditioning unit in a room may not be the best or most economical location for it. Every home is different, and the right air conditioner will depend on many factors,

Here are just some of those many factors:

  • Distance from the main power board and obstructions along the way. Wiring costs money, as does the labour involved to run wires via alternative routes or to drill through walls or joists that may be preventing access to the power board.
  • How far away the outdoor unit would need to be from the indoor unit. Sometimes it is impractical or even impossible for the outdoor compressor to be placed immediately on the other side of the wall from the indoor unit. Thus, extra piping may be required.
  • Room orientation and restrictions to airflow within the room itself. Having an air conditioner blowing straight into your face while you are watching TV, or onto hot meals at dinner time, may not be ideal. Placing it in a corner to save on piping costs may not be aesthetically pleasing either. Nearby hallways, partial wall outcrops, large light fittings… there are many things that can restrict or ‘hog’ airflow from where it needs to go.
  • Window size and ceiling insulation. Large windows and poor or no insulation will have a big impact on how hard the air conditioner will need to work in order to compensate.

To ensure you get the best fit for your needs ask the experts you can trust, PlumbSpec. We will do a thorough assessment of your specific needs and recommend suitable options to match.

We have been servicing the Albury-Wodonga area for decades and because we buy direct from the manufacturers you can save over 25% on Air Conditioning from brands like Daikin, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, Panasonic and more.
