Water Saving Tips from PlumbSpec.

Summer is on its way, so now is the time to check and do maintenance so as to reduce water consumption and thus save money on water bills.

1. Instead of running the tap until it’s cold for a cold drink of water, keep a sealed jug in the fridge.
2. Only run your dishwasher or washing machine when you have a full load. Also use the economy setting to save water and energy.
3. Rinse fruit and vegetables in a half-filled sink of water instead of rinsing under a running tap.
4. Use a cup when brushing your teeth instead of leaving the tap running.
5. When shaving, use the plug in the sink instead of rinsing your razor under a running tap.
6. Check your water meter, if the numbers are turning over while all your taps are off, you may have a water leak somewhere.
7. Use compost in your garden to help to lock moisture into the soil.
8. Use a drip system or water plants at their bases instead of spraying the leaves.
9. Group plants that have similar water needs together.
10. Use more native plants in your garden.
11. Don’t cut your lawns too short.
12. The best time to water your garden is very early in the morning or in the evening to reduce evaporation.
13. Wash your car, boat or caravan on the lawn, this way you can water and fertilise your lawn at the same time. Many car shampoos contain phosphates that are very similar to garden fertilisers.
14. Instead of hosing garden paths, driveways or patios, use a broom or outdoor blower.
15. Regularly check outdoor taps and hoses for leaks. A dripping tap wastes up to 2,000 litres of water a month.
16. Keep your pool covered, more than half your water in the pool can evaporate over the course of a year if you don’t use a cover.
17. Use water efficient fittings and appliances throughout your home.
