Do you think that a simple wiring job can be done yourself?

Many people fall victim to home DIY electrical jobs that cause extensive damage to their homes or even result in death. We often hear stories of people getting an electrical shock from a faulty or wrongly installed power socket. Or damage caused to expensive appliances because of faulty or incorrectly installed wiring.

Add to that the fact that insurance companies will not pay out on claims made if it is found that any electrical work has been carried out by an unqualified individual.

DIY electrical work cannot be retrospectively certified. It doesn’t matter if it’s 100% compliant and checked by a qualified tradie.

House fires can be a result of poor electrical work. Unqualified people won’t know the appropriate wiring and fittings that must be used under all the different circumstances within a home.

What the law says:

NSW Fair Trading insists: An electrical licence is required before any electrical wiring work can be undertaken in NSW, regardless of the cost of the work and regardless of whether the work is residential, commercial or industrial.

Under their definition electrical work encompasses the manufacturing, constructing, installing, testing, maintaining, repairing, altering, removing or replacing of any electrical equipment.

In Victoria, all electrical work must be carried out by an Electrician that is licensed with Energy Safe Victoria and issue you with Certificates of Electrical Safety for all work on domestic premises.

That pretty much leaves you with replacing light bulbs.

While rules and regulations vary slightly from state to state, the broad parameters are basically the same.
