Paying too much for water?

Water-efficient appliances and fixtures save water and money and can make a big difference to Australia’s overall use of clean tap water.

Building or renovating? This is often the perfect time to consider installing appliances and fixtures that allow you to reduce the amount of water you use.

In your home, the appliances and fixtures that use most water will usually be the washing machine, dishwasher, shower and toilet.

If you want to install a grey water system, it’s a good idea to factor this in during the planning stages. For example, it can be difficult to retrofit a grey water system that recycles water from the shower, bath and hand basins.

Australians could save more than $1 billion on our water and energy bills just by using more water efficient appliances and fixtures. About 25 per cent of these savings would come from using more water efficient shower heads, another 50 per cent from more efficient washing machines and over 20 per cent from water efficient toilets.

Other ways to save on water usage is to plant native plants that do not require a lot of water to survive. You can also save water by sweeping, not hosing paths and driveways, wash the car on the lawn so you can water the lawn and end up with a clean car.

Also make sure you do a monthly maintenance check on your plumbing systems. Take a quick look for leaking taps, wet areas around toilets and tap bases, check ceilings and walls for water damage or mould and look for spongy areas in the garden that may be from a damaged pipe.
