Here are some simple things that can be done to reduce water consumption around your home:

• Plant a water wise garden. Research what plants need less water to survive and pick the ones you like to look of. Australian natives are a sure-fire winner.
• Don’t run the tap while brushing your teeth. Only turn the tap on when you are ready to rinse your mouth out. Another idea is to half fill a small glass and use that to rinse instead.
• Replace old plumbing fixtures with new ones that reduce the amount of water you use. There are now taps, shower fittings and toilets that reduce water flow while dispersing what does come through, so as to still thoroughly wet the area required.
• Update old appliances with new ones that don’t need as much water to operate as their older counterparts. Those that use most water will usually be the washing machine and dishwasher.

Water-efficient appliances and fixtures will have the biggest impact on saving a lot of water and money.

In fact, Australians could save more than $1 billion on water and energy bills just by using more water-efficient appliances and fixtures.

Under the Australian Government Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards scheme about 25 per cent of these savings will come from using more water efficient shower heads another 50 per cent from more efficient washing machines and over 20 per cent from water efficient toilets.
